This post contains spoilers for the Harry Potter books and films.
Some might say that this is like choosing a favourite between their children, but I have decided that it’s time to make it official and show my favourites in the famous Harry Potter series.
I had troubles though, when I had to decide on the rules for this top. Should I consider books only? Is that even possible (films, fanfiction, the Harry Potter unofficial musical)? Should I consider Harry Potter and the Cursed Child too (what about the play that I saw just two months ago, does that count?)
After a long consideration, I decided to not push any limits on myself. It is nearly impossible to divide my experiences and remember what I would have thought before or after one or another experience, so here’s my list of my favourite Harry Potter characters. But I decided to not include the Cursed Child, for that you can read my book review and/or my play review. Spoiler alert: Scorpius is my favourite.
5. Arthur Weasley – such a goofy muggle lover, how can you not love him? He is amazing and funny, and nice character and father figure. I just absolutely love him and the fact that he has both – the goofy and lovable side, but at the same time, he is ready to kick some ass and stand up for his family. I can see what Molly saw in him, wink wink…
I think that my favourite scene with him is when his sons took his flying car and he was so, so excited that instead of scolding them, he was asking, how it went. He is such a cute thing! I pretty much like almost all the moments he shows up.
I kind of think that I had to choose between Arthur and Ron, and I guess that is my choice!
4. Minerva McGonagall – Am I the only one who feels like she is depiction of a grown up Hermione? Anyway, McGonagall was for some time my very favourite character in the series. She was strong and fair character, could even say that she was all the way good, but had her interests (Quidditch) and mischief sometimes, which added the cherry on top and made me love her more. I hate intrigues and injustice and she was pretty much the eradicator of intrigues and injustice.
My favourite scene with McGonagall probably is her excitement when she tells Oliver Wood that she has found him a seeker! There was also a thing where she conjures sandwiches for Ron and Harry. And then the moment when she stands up to Snape in the sixth (or seventh book?)… And then how she is a cat! She is just great!
3. Bellatrix Lestrange – I have always liked Bellatrix, because she is smart and crazy at the same time, her backstory and connection to Sirius makes her even more interesting to me. And really, she’s simply pure evil that is obsessed with Voldemort, but at the same time not pictured in a cliche way, is just so great. I have to say that this decision is partially connected to the amazing work that Helena Bonham Carter did in the films, so hurray for that!
Well this is a trixy one. I’m pretty sure that my favourite moment where Bellatrix was involved was at the very beginning of the sixth book. It is when she asked Snape to kill Dumbledore, if Draco isn’t going to be able to. But in general I like most scenes where she is going around and being crazy.
2. Severus Snape – Isn’t he an amazing character? All those secrets, love and hate all entwined together… I think that J. K. Rowling must have had an idea about Snape for a very long time, because otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible to develop such a heartbreaking story. I loved how he hated and loved Harry at the same time and how he was ready to sacrifice so much. I have to admit, at first, when we hadn’t found out his part in the books, he was my favourite villain, but well, now he is a hero.
I think for Snape book and film has collided together the most, because for me Alan Rickman was the perfect Snape. I like many scenes with him, but my favourite is the cliche one – ‘After all this time? Always.”
1. Hermione Granger – I have always liked her character and loved the fact that she wants to know it all. She is smart and educated and is trying her best, I think she is a great depiction of me, if I would find myself suddenly being a witch that will attend school for Witchcraft. Surely she is not perfect, but I have always liked her a lot and she is my all time favourite.
My favourite scene for Hermione… well that is a tough one. I like where she says that they ‘might get killed, or worse – expelled’. I’ve always laughed so much on that (and have to credit Ron too), I also liked how, when Ron and Harry wasn’t talking in the fourth movie, Hermione said that she is not an ‘owl’.
So these are my favourite characters, I wrote down all of my possible choices in a list and had 12 characters, but only five spots, so here are some honourable mentions that didn’t make the list: Ron, Petunia, Luna, Draco (team Draco!)…
Let me know your shock and distaste for my list in the comments below! Don’t forget to add your own favourites and well, maybe I have forgotten someone really, really awesome… Just to be sure… I didn’t forget Dumbledore or Harry, or Molly… they weren’t on my list. Forgive me, dear fans! Cheerio!

Definitely agree with McGonagall and Arthur Weasley! I would put Luna in one of my top spots–and maybe Neville! I always thought he was under appreciated. Good post!

I am always a bit baffled about the bit with Neville. Meaning that the prophecy could have been about Neville, but it was Voldemort who made the choice, yet I don’t fully understand all that, because so many people have said that I am wrong assuming that Neville could have been the chosen one. Anyway, I feel you, Neville and Luna were in my top10, but didn’t make the cut. I think that Arthur is very underappreciated! He is a great character!

Ooh, I did something like this, only I made it top11 and excluded the main cast to make the choice less painful.
I think I chose Snape and the twins in the end. ‘Always makes me blub and the twins were who I wanted to be growing up as a kid…
Also, special props to Dolores. It’s hard to find a glorious villain in novels but Dolores held your attention and made her downfall all the more glorious

I liked Dolores, but not enough to put her on my list in terms of villains Bellatrix wins even Voldemort for me!
It was really hard to make up rules. If I would have included the Cursed Child, probably Scorpius would have gotten on my list, because GOD, that actor was so good! The book doesn’t do justice to the play at all!

Great post! I really loved Luna, and how she was just herself and didn’t care what anyone thought.

I really liked how Rowling handpicked the actress and character for Luna. I liked her a lot too, but she was somewhere in TOP10 unfortunately.

I disagree on one character- Bellatrix. Mainly because she killed off my favorite character!

Glad I wasn’t the only one who really liked Bellatrix. She was just so delightfully demented! 🙂
Perhaps because I read the series for the first time as an adult, most of my favorite characters were adults.

That is a wonderful description – delightfully demented.
I believe that most kids love the children characters, because they relate to them very closely! I actually didn’t like Harry Potter series in general, when I read them as a teen. Everyone was hyping and I just didn’t care much. Later I became an administrator of HP and LOTR forum and while you are in midst of so many people crazy for HP, it catches on! 😀

Nice! I didn’t actually read the series until earlier this year. The hype about them put me off for years, but I had some free time in January and figured there were worse things to do with it. Overall, I did enjoy the series a lot more than I thought I would.

I had a similar problem, when I just started reading them. But I’m glad that you didn’t hate it! 😀

Okay, I love your post, but the part I can’t get over is how cool that blu-ray box set looks! Seeing Harry young to old is just such a good idea. I also agree with most of your points, but I love Draco too much for him to not be on the list. I’m not sure why I’ve always like his character, but I have. I also agree that there’s something about Bellatrix that is just so awesome. She’s crazy and unpredictable and makes you so scared. But also, she’s just pretty bad ass so there’s that.

Yes, I was also team Draco, but somehow on the way I lost it, perhaps because there was so much going on. Although in the sixth book he had such a huge role, I still thought that he felt like a minor character. I would have liked for him to be more in the books in general.

neville and Ron please, maybe Ron and Arthur could share the spot?? loved reading the whole list and one thing which really stands out is how spot on the casting of the movies was. Now when I re-read Harry Potter ( yes , guilty of that) I always imagine the people who were in the movies….specially Snape/Alan Rickman. I think he is number one for me!

Neville was in my list from which I had to choose five, I’ve always had a special place for him in my heart, but… yes, he didn’t make it.
I was actually thinking about making them share the spot! Opposed to all the people who see Ron as depressed and envious, I see all his jokes and love for food… I think that the way he was in the last couple of films made a lot of people to hate him, but I still think he is cool. (The actor in the play – Cursed Child also did very well!)
Indeed, I also do that, probably not for all the characters, but for most – definitely! I think Alan Rickman really shined as Snape. I was heartbroken when I found out that he passed away! I think that now, when I watch the scenes with Snape, it will be so much harder as I know that Rickman passed.

Oo, Your take on Minerva McGonagall being a grown up Hermione is brilliant. And I am with you on Arthur Weasley as one of your top 5. I really love both Weasley parents, actually. Bellatrix, no so much, although Helena Bonham Carter did such a good acting job.
I would have a hard time with this list. You are brave!

I did have a hard time, indeed! I think that Arthur is soooo underrated, he is nice and funny, and goofy at the same time.
I honestly felt like cheating, because I had both McGonagall and Hermione on my list. 😀 But I like them both so much!

I think I’d put Snape at the top of my list. Rowling was a genius with that character, with the way he walked the line between “Am I a good guy or a bad guy?” through the whole series, right up to the very end.

I agree with your list, and there are so many to choose from! The tough part for me is to separate a great literary character from the great performance by talented actors. Alan Rickman MADE ME love Snape! Thanks for stopping by my blog and for this insightful post. I look forward to spending more time on your blog and looking for gems like this!
